Cara Memasang dan Memakai Time Machine

Backup saat ini sudah menjadi keharusan, apalagi bagi para profesional dan freelancer. Ada banyak aplikasi back-up untuk Mac OS X, tapi bagi pengguna Leopard, Time Machine adalah sistem backup yang terintegrasikan langsung ke sistem dan kita tidak perlu membayar untuk memakainya. Tulisan ini merupakan tutorial lengkap mengenai cara memasang, memakai dan tips Time Machine.

Apa saja yang dibutuhkan?

Untuk memakai Time Machine, Anda membutuhkan hard disk yang ukurannya sama dengan atau lebih besar dengan ukuran hard disk internal Anda. Karena apabila lebih kecil, Anda harus memilih beberepa bagian saja, dan tidak dapat mem-bac-up keseluruhan sistem.

Koneksi hard disk bisa memakai Firewire atau USB. Kalau Anda mempunyai Time Capsule atau hard disk yang mempunyai koneksi WiFi bisa dipakai juga. Untuk tutorial ini saya akan membahas koneksi hard disk yang memakai kabel USB.

Menyiapkan hard disk

Ketika sebuah hard disk baru di colokan ke Mac, akan diminta apakah hard disk tersebut mau dipakai untuk Time Machine atau tidak.

Pertanyaan pertama, jadikan backup atau tidak

Apabila Anda memilih Cancel, maka hard disk tersebut akan bertindak seperti hard disk data biasa. Untuk memakainya sebagai hard disk Time Machine klik tombol Use as Backup Disk.

Selanjutnya akan muncul preference Time Machine, preference ini terdapat di System Preference.

Apabila hard disk nya sudah terisi, Mac akan memformat seluruh hard disknya, jadi hati-hati dengan data Anda.

Selanjutnya Time Machine akan melakukan backup pertama kali yang akan memakan waktu tergantung dari besarnya hard disk. Untuk yang memakai Firewire, waktu backup akan jauh lebih cepat dibandingkan dengan USB. Pastikan laptop Anda terhubung ke listrik.

Mengatur folder backup

Apabila besarnya hard disk Time Machine lebih besar atau sama dengan besarnya hard disk internal maka Anda tidak perlu pusing mengatur folder mana saja yang tidak akan di backup. Tapi kalau Anda ingin mengaturnya, silakan buka Time Machine preference di System Preference. Kliklah tombol Option.

Masukan folder untuk di black list

Perlu di perhatikan, yang Anda tambahkan ke sini adalah folder yang tidak akan di backup oleh Time Machine, bukan folder yang dibackup, dalam istilah lainnya “black list”. Dari gambar di atas saya tidak menambahkan apapun, karena ukuran hard disk Time Machine saya lebih besar.

Mengakses Time Machine

Di Time Machine preference Anda bisa memunculkan icon Time Machine di menu bar, dan bisa memanggilnya langsung dari situ.

Atau, Anda bisa memanggil aplikasi Time Machine, gunakan saja Spotlight atau menyalakan manual dari folder Application.

Ketika Time Machine menyala, Desktop Anda akan disembunyikan dan diganti dengan antar muka ala lubang cacing seperti di film-film luar angkasa. Klik gambar di bawah ini untuk membaca keterangan bagian-bagian antar muka Time Machine.

Anda dapat mengakses berkas dari masa lalu dengan memilih jendela Finder, atau memilih garis waktu, atau dengan menekan tombol panah. Untuk mengambil berkas dari masa lalu, pilih berkasnya di Finder dan kemudian klik tombol Restore.

Mengembalikan berkas dari masa lalu ke masa sekarang

Apabila berkas yang Anda ambil dari masa lalu tidak ada di masa sekarang maka Time Machine akan langsung menyalinnya. Tapi apabila berkasnya ada atau mempunyai nama yang sama, maka akan terjadi paradox dan Mac Anda akan hancur, hehe… becanda. Apabila itu terjadi, maka Time Machine akan menanyakan dengan dialog di bawah ini.

Mau yang mana?

Pilihan di atas artinya: “Keep Original” berkas saat ini yang akan di pakai. “Keep Both” kedua berkas ada ada, berkas yang lama akan diganti namanya. “Replace” berkas saat ini akan digantikan dengan berkas yang lama.

Mengatur waktu backup

Secara default, Time Machine akan mengatur waktu backup setiap satu jam sekali. Bagi komputer yang minim aktivitas waktu ini dirasakan terlalu cepat. Ada satu aplikasi pihak ketiga yang dapat mengatur waktu backup Time Machine, namanya TimeMachineScheduler, namanya jelas sekali menerangkan fungsinya.

Dengan aplikasi ini, Anda dapat mengatur interval backup Time Machine.

Copying and Moving Files with Copy Handler

It is quite common to copy files from one directory to another or to external removable storage device. Although it seems to be a very simple task but in case you are looking for a tool with more customization and full control, here is a good software utility, named as Copy Handler that able to help you.

Copy Handler is a freeware and once you have installed and launched it, it will run at background and stay quietly in system tray. Microsoft released an excellent add-on for Windows XP called Microsoft Private Folder. Microsoft Private Folder is a product released by Microsoft as part of their “Windows Genuine Advantage” program.
